Job description

HP Labs is seeking a qualified candidate for a full time, scientific research position starting in summer of 2019. The candidate will join a team focused on reinventing immunodiagnostic workflows, platforms and their manufacturing processes. This position requires proficiency with biochemistry, bioengineering prototyping, flow and mass transfer, liquid and solid phase reactions, molecular biology techniques, immunology and a solid foundation of the underlying scientific principles.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, characterize, and validate new paper-based or microfluidic-based immunodiagnostic platforms
  • Perform complex experimentation including data collection, summary and thorough analysis
  • Use analytical techniques to characterize what influences test performance and conduct optimization studies to improve design
  • Write and file patents in coordination with legal department.
  • Publish results in high-impact journals
  • Establish beneficial relationships within the industry through conferences, trade shows and seminars
  • Be self-starting, resourceful, innovative, and open-minded
  • Extend reach and impact through mentorship of junior scientists and students

Required knowledge and skills

  • Understanding of all aspects of immunodiagnostic workflow, e.g:
    • Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) development and production, including membrane selection, reagent selection, blocking conditions, conjugate pad development, and optimization of assay conditions, e.g.: buffer composition, antibody concentrations
    • ELISA development and production
  • Key technical constraints of state of the art LFIA and ELISAs
  • Emerging immunoassay functional elements, systems and platforms
  • Basic understanding of flow and mass transport in porous materials, or microfluidic systems
  • Basic understanding of biochemical reactions (liquid and surface reactions)
  • Antibody and protein conjugation
  • Routine protein and NA handling and aseptic techniques, including purification and characterization and liquid and solid phase sample prep
  • Familiarity with DLS, HPLC, DSC, ITC, CD, SPR, affinity chromatography and gel electrophoresis
  • Handling and testing of biological samples such as serum/plasma, urine, etc.
  • Ability to solve problems with scientific principles, perform data analysis, and summarize results

Desired knowledge and skills

  • Basic understanding of polymer or organic chemistry, surface chemistry, and colloidal science
  • Tissue culture experience
  • Experience with lyophilization and reconstitution of proteins
  • Experience with rapid prototyping using PDMS, 3D printing, pumping, valving and microfluidic assemblies
  • Proficiency with instrument control using python, Labview or Matlab

Education and experience

  • MS or PhD in Molecular bioengineering, chemical engineering, biochemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied physics or similar required
  • Five (5) years of hands-on experience in Point-of-Care immunoassay development.
