Working with internal stakeholders and outsourced development partners, you will develop and execute solutions to resolve any existing issues, ensuring that our operating processes are cost-effective and uphold the highest quality.

The role of a Writing Systems Engineer in a New Product Introduction (NPI) environment is to enable the launch of new products and ensure that the manufactured product will meet customer expectations.  Meeting these expectations involves requirements that are well understood and developed from design specifications to manufacturing process to deliver a well-functioning product.  Product characterization and issue resolution play an important role in achieving a high level of quality in the finished product.    

Job Description:

Applies a basic foundation of engineering, physics and science to product development. Uses professional concepts and theoretical knowledge acquired through specialized training, education or previous experience. Develops expertise and practical knowledge of applications within the business environment for product development and troubleshooting.  Acts as team member by providing information, analysis and recommendations to support team efforts. Exercises independent judgment within an ambiguous environment.  Recommends performance objectives for engineering, test, manufacturing, product and design functions.  May assure compliance to in-house and/or external specifications and standards (i.e. Six Sigma, Lean Sigma and others).  The purpose of a Writing Systems Engineer is to develop writing system methods to measure and evaluate quality as it relates to our customer’s needs.  Writing System Engineering groups span across multiple disciplines, including Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical.  This position will work very closely with HP R&D groups, as well as Product Engineering and Systems Integration Engineering teams.  Good communication skill is a must. 

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with product development teams, including from partner printer divisions to ensure robust product design, reliability, and performance
  • Identify the risks early in the program and determine the test methods needed to characterize the product to ensure end-customer needs are met.  This is especially true in any product or process NUD’s (New, Unique and Different)
  • Throughout the program, characterize the product to ensure risk is understood and work with teams to eliminate or minimize risk
  • Understand the fundamentals of a product/process design and create tests that would discover issues, understand print quality, characterize the product, and provide data to validate product performance
  • Make judgments on product print quality and reliability with the customer in mind
  • Establish engineering metrics that help guide ink, supply, and manufacturing teams
  • Participate in the qualification of the product as necessary
  • Lead or work with a team for issue resolution
  • Document and transfer specifications, justifications, and knowledge to our manufacturing group that enables a robust product for the whole product life cycle
  • Negotiate specifications end-to-end to ensure shippable product
  • Ensure knowledge is captured and robust change management is followed
  • Participate in any transfer activities to high-volume factories, as needed

  • Essential Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S., Engineering, Physics or Materials Science
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of engineering fundamentals
  • Ability to partner with others and interact with team members from other disciplines, projects, organizations, cultures and companies to coordinate and provide solutions
  • Demonstrated ability and strong desire to learn
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal and ability to present in groups in a coherent manner
  • Skills in analytical decision-making, troubleshooting and problem-solving
  • Proficiency in practical experiment design and knowledge of applied statistics
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, work within defined policies and practices while determining the best method for accomplishing work and achieving objectives
  • Exhibit solid planning, organizational and documentation skills
  • High degree of commitment and initiative
  • Ability to apply first principles to provide logical steps to issue resolution while applying common sense
  • Demonstrated ability to translate a potential problem into test tools and methods necessary to quantify risks and evaluate solutions using short-loop methods when full system testing is not available
  • Excellent teamwork skills
